connie at sod houseSix days and 3,000 miles later, we arrived in Baltimore. We'd visited the Mormon Temple in SLC, went into the Saratoga Hot Springs in WY, saw fields of corn stretching across three states, but we somehow missed the world's largest ball of string.

I awoke one morning with the bright idea of driving my little four cylinder Toyota from San Diego to Baltimore to join my husband, Sam. Without a flinch, my always-up-for-adventure sister, Connie, who lives in Redding, CA, said "Sure, I'll go with you. It'll be fun." And it was.

In Ogallala, NE, we visited the Petrified Wood Museum–loved it. In Gothenburg, NE it was a Pony Express Station–interesting. Last stop in Nebraska was this sod house on the left. We were told that these little huts often housed up to nine people. It was not pretty inside either – made me shudder.

Some pioneer women found themselves isolated from human contact for months and months on end. Many, in their despair, took their own lives. I was glad I had the little Toyota to drive me away from there (with an iced vanilla latte in hand).

At the Smithsonian Art Gallery in WDC (right), gazing up and through Alexander Calder's massive, floating mobile, it seemed as though the sky opened and I might take flight.
