As a Christmas gift for Little Roger, I filled a big box with dried oak leaves for him to crunch in his pudgy little fingers. Once that box was open it was hard to pry him away to open the rest of his gifts.

Jonathan and Grandpa Sam – what's not to love

If you are around a teenager for any length of time, this pose will seem very familiar. Anthony, now 13, is a pro at these digital games. I quit trying to remember what the devices are called from day to day.

You see why posed pictures don't really work in this family.

Sam had a week off after Christmas, so I flew up to Sacramento so we could take a little road trip up the northern coast. We stopped first to visit with my dear friend, Mickey and meet her new husband, Don. We followed them out (Mickey's secret road) to Jenner Beach where the Russian River spills into the ocean.

In this picture we stopped to take in the breathtaking vistas along the way. I like this picture because Mickey and Don together make one shadow.

Mickey and I were roomates in Venice Beach back in the seventies – geesh

Stump Beach was my favorite spot. The hike up and down a bazillion steps was so worth it. The small cove felt like another world, full of twisted old bleached roots, huge rocks performing balancing acts and seaweed that looked as though it might just get up and dance away.

We thought this might have been an old schoolhouse at one time. Amazing that it is still standing.

This was such a dramatic scene, as the waves came splashing in on the rocks below. If we'd had the camera on the right setting you wouldn't have to use so much of your imagination. Or maybe you should just go there.
